The average person spends about 40 hours a week in the office. Whether that’s a company office or you are working from home, that’s a good chunk of time to spend in one place. So you don’t want to waste a lot of time searching through piles of junk to get those important documents that you need. If you want to keep your efficiency and productivity at work up, then it’s vital to keep your office clean.

“A clean office makes for a clear mind”. That’s not just another meaningless cliché. Organizing your workload and setting up clear systems lets you work harder and smarter. It shows that you’re on top of things, which is an impression you want your boss or customers to have. Not to mention the benefits that having a clean house will have on the environment!

But cleaning the office isn’t high on the list of priorities for many people. It’s a very smart idea to hire an office cleaning service. If you do it on your own it’s important to adopt some easy and effortless changes into your routine.

Here are 5 tips that will help you get started on the right foot:

  1. Get Rid of the Clutter

declutter and keep your office clean

The first thing on your list should be decluttering. Saying goodbye to all the collectibles and promotional freebies you’re acquired over time might be hard. But your goal should be to keep a clutter-free workspace. Try to minimize your knick-knacks to important things like certificates, prizes, and other things that have an emotional value.

The biggest culprit of office clutter is paperwork. So do your best to clear the important stuff as soon as it hits your desk and recycle the rest when possible. Also, keep the printing to a minimum. This is also a great way to start making your office more eco-friendly.

  1. Be More Organized

In a typical office, it might not be possible to clear everything away. So you need to embrace some creative storage solutions. You could start by creating a filing system to keep all your important documents. Keep one drawer or cabinet free to store all your paperwork in. Another great idea is to install some cupboards or shelves that will allow you to put items away and protect them from dust.

  1. Keep Dust Down

Dusting and spraying your workspace, keyboard, phone, and other electronics regularly should be an important part of your process. It also helps you maintain a healthy and spotless office.

But most people rarely have the time or will to get down and dirty with a dust cloth. So using disinfectant wipes is a great way to ensure that this gets done. Disinfectant wipes are a simple way to clean and sanitize your workspace. They don’t need much time or effort and help you prevent the spread of any dust or germ-related illnesses. Check the windows and glasses for they are also the most likely to have dust in the workspace. Regular cleaning and investing in good quality cleaning tools would help fix this problem.

You should also pay attention to the carpet. This should be vacuumed regularly. Since most people can’t do this themselves, it might be a good idea to hire a commercial carpet cleaning company to take care of this.

  1. Don’t Eat at the Desk

This is probably one of the most common – and unusual – things that happen in any office. But food crumbs and wrappers are not an attractive look for the workplace. Not only is it unsightly, it’s also quite unhealthy. So try and avoid eating at your desk completely. If that’s not possible, then make sure to tidy up right away.

  1. Keep your Bins Empty

It might seem a little excessive, but it’s important to empty your bins every single day. This is especially true if you use your bin to throw away food leftovers. If you don’t empty your bin regularly, in this case, your office will soon start to smell. Try to add this to your daily routine and you will start noticing a marked difference in your workplace.
