dwp | design worldwide partnership – an architect firm designing environmentally responsible facilities for sports – has welcomed the news that multiple high profile Australian athletes have lent their support to the recently launched climate action campaign ‘The Cool Down’.

The architect firm has strong environmental credentials as a founding signatory of ‘architects declare’ and the dwp designed Northern Aquatic Recreation Centre in Geelong, Victoria is the first ever 6 Star Green Star rated aquatic centre.

Jake Martin, one of the specialist sports architects and Associate Design Director at dwp Melbourne notes “as architects who design environmentally responsible facilities for sports, dwp is really excited to see so many Australian Sports Stars leading the awareness raising campaign ‘The Cool Down’.

“We have recently completed the Melbourne Sports Centre Parkville redevelopment for State Netball and Hockey Victoria and we were delighted to be awarded the ‘Community Facility of the Year 2021’ accolade from Parks and Leisure Australia for the Oakleigh Recreation Centre development that we designed for the City of Monash.”

Ivana Simkovic is Design Director of dwp Sydney Studio and has a personal commitment to design excellence that shows through her innovative thinking and design review processes to ensure projects achieve the best outcomes for clients. Simkovic’s approach is based on her dedication to deliver innovative sustainable solutions and positive contribution to the broader societal context.

Simkovic adds “creating greener cities is one of the driving motivations at dwp. We have a real focus on innovative sustainability and timber engineering is one of those sustainability initiatives that I have been driving.

“The use of mass timber construction for the Eric Tweedale stadium is the first use of glulam timber for this type of facility in Australia and it represents an impressive achievement in timber engineering. Based on the success of this and other recent projects we consider timber as a beautiful, natural and tactile material alternative to the ubiquitous timber and steel that other architects tend to use by default. Timber has many sustainability credentials, impressive structural potential and unparalleled natural beauty.”
