The regional New South Wales town of Gunnedah has celebrated creativity and sustainability in announcing the winners of the 2021 Waste Into Art competition, with 59 innovative entries across seven categories wowing judges.

The biennial competition has been running regionally for more than 20 years, challenging early childhood services, schools, community groups and individuals to transform waste into art and design.

In 2021, the theme was “metal reimagined”, and Deputy Mayor Cr Rob Hooke said he was “so impressed by the variety of art we received this year. It takes a great deal of creativity and a high degree of technique to work with these materials.”

In the early childhood/preschool section, the award went to Gunnedah Family Day Care who submitted a piece called Metal Art.

Waste Into Art will be on display at the Gunnedah Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery until Sunday, July 4, with the Open Community category to be determined by a people’s choice vote.

Cr Hooke thanked all participants, and encouraged those in the local community to come and view the works in person.
