What should we all do in the next 5 years to prep for climate change? This is a quick hit to answer that and is based on info rattling around in my head. I don’t recall seeing this from the more accomplished DK climate posters; so I put together a quick “mud splattered on the wall” list just to start this conversation. I’m sure any number of you (maybe all!) could find/publish a better list, but again this is a good subject to bring up. Also if you’ve got better please share!
Yes, we individually cannot solve the climate emergency, but we can all make positive climate smart changes for ourselves and families. I’m mostly pointing to us 1st worlders in the US and Canada, but this might apply to anyone. When you look at the real data the future is VERY GRIM, but I’m not covering that here.
What I’m attempting to do is personalize this, and show a WAG on what we should do now and w/in the next 5 years for yourselves and your families. I just picked a few high points (contraptions — really transportation, shelter, food, water, and a touch of medical).
To comment on my own list, this us daunting and massive — who many gas powered contraptions do you have, the more rural you are the more of them. Can you replace them all in five years? This subject alone is HUGE for most peeps. If you could afford it, what about stable electricity and maintenance? This is a subject for another post, but when globalization breaks down, and it will, our long supply lines for parts for our complex contraptions will go quick…..
Next land, a quick google sez you need about 2.55 acres of farmland per person for food, and that’s just the land not all the other stuff that’s needed — and who here knows how to do this? How does a family of say 4 get 10 or so acres of farmland and feed themselves sustainable for a decade or two?
I’ll stop here, but I urge you all to start thinking about this…. data sez we’ll be at 1.5C soon (5 years or so)… so you all need to think about how you’ll improvise, adapt, and overcome!!!!
